Essay on Abortion Every Woman Has the Right to Choose

The debate over whether or not to legalize abortion has been going on since the 19th century. With abortion illegal, it would affect the well-being and rights of many women. Abortion should be kept legal in the United States because it is a personal and private decision. According to our ninth and fourteenth amendments, we have a right to privacy. The ninth amendment states that â€Å"the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.† (Mount). This means that the government cannot take away rights that they did not establish in the constitution unless a new amendment is passed. The fourteenth amendment states that â€Å"all persons born or naturalized in the United†¦show more content†¦Teenage pregnancy is a major reason why abortion may be chosen instead of carrying out a pregnancy. One out of three pregnant teens choose to have an abortion(Lowen, Teen Pregnancy Statistics in the US). M ost teens who have children don’t know how to handle everything. They rarely finish high school, which limits their job opportunity, ultimately heightening the risk of raising their children in poverty (Lowen, Why Teens Choose Abortion). If the government decides to make abortion illegal, the amount of illegal abortions would rise in the United States and in other countries. In the year 2000, the percentage of unsafe abortions and mortality rates because of those botched abortions were higher in undeveloped countries (Global and regional estimates of annual incidence of unsafe abortion and death due to unsafe abortion, 2000†). Clearly, the consequences of making abortions illegal would be devastating to our country. Thirteen percent of women’s deaths are caused by illegal abortions all over the world (Trupin and Stoppler).
